A business organisation has made a senior appointment.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has welcomed Professor Jane Robinson as its new North East Council chair.

Prof Robinson says she will ensure the region’s business voice “is heard nationally to inform policies and initiatives that support growth”.

She takes over from Frank Millar, who will now act as vice-chair.

In addition to her regional role, Prof Robinson – who is pro-vice-chancellor at Newcastle University – will also sit on the CBI Chairs’ Committee, the organisation’s senior policy-mandating and cross-economy board.

Prof Robinson, whose CV also includes time as Gateshead Council chief executive, said: “I’m honoured to be appointed chair.

“It is an incredibly exciting time for the region; we have significant strengths and big ambitions.

“It is more important than ever that we come together as a business community with our partners to maximise the benefits for the North East and the country as a whole.”

Matt Bratton, CBI regional director for the North East and Cumbria, said: “Jane brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in supporting our region to collaborate and thrive.

“She is an influential and highly respected individual in our region.

“She will be a fantastic spokesperson for North East industry with her in-depth knowledge of the opportunities and challenges they face.

“Her expertise in the higher education sector will also be of great value to our national committee.

“I’d also like to thank Frank for his dedicated service as chair in 2023 and 2024.

“His steadfast support and guidance have been invaluable, especially through some tough times for the business community.”
