Getting to know... Rob Boville

We know you as the co-founder of BearTech Dev and a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Forum, but who is the person behind the title? Tell us a little about what makes you tick…
Behind the title, I’m just someone who loves solving problems and building things that make life better for people. I’m naturally introverted, so I do my best thinking in quiet moments, usually first thing in the morning before any body is online or awake. My family is what keeps me grounded; they’re the reason I work the way I do. I’ve always been curious about how things work, and I get a real buzz out of turning messy, complex situations into something simple and useful. But what really makes me tick is helping people grow, whether that’s giving someone their first shot in tech or building an environment where good people can thrive. At my core, I’m driven by wanting to do right by people, create things that matter, and leave things better than I found them.

Did you always want to work in your industry?
Ever since I was 9 years old I knew I wanted to be in Technology it wasn’t until I was 14 or 15 that I focused in on being a software developer even though my journey wasn’t straight forwards I ended up graduating as a mature student from Teesside University and started my dream career.

What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?
Like any entrepreneur will tell you the highs and lows can be many and varied. For me personally the best bits are the reasons I became a software engineer, before starting our business, and that is to solve problems, big or small they don’t always even need a tech solution I just love solving problems. The worst bits for me have to be things that take me away from that and bury me in paperwork, but it’s a necessary cost to be able to work with an amazing team and do what we love and grow our businesses.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement has to be my family, Ali and I brought together our two families many years ago and have created the strongest, and in my biased opinion, most awesome blended family we could ever dream of. Topping it off with two grandkids that love it just as much as we do.

How do you relax outside of work?
That’s pretty easy I love watching movies, true escapism. Although if it is a nice weekend day you will typically find me with walking boots on out in the Cleveland hills or Yorkshire Dales leaving all the tech behind and the biggest problem to solve is where to go for lunch.

What makes the North East such a great place to live and work?
The North East is a place where humour is typically at the heart of most encounters, people are generally friendly and since starting our own businesses it’s a place that we have found great support and care, even with people who should be competing with us and vice versa.

Tell us something about you we didn’t know…
I have been known to dabble in magic from time to time.
