£5.1 million scheme to ‘transform’ town begins

A £5.1 million transport improvement programme is getting underway in a North Lincolnshire town to strengthen connections between residential areas, schools, the railway station and town centre.

Esh Construction will begin delivering upgrades across Barton-upon-Humber on behalf of North Lincolnshire Council in mid-September.

The contractor’s civil engineering division will initially start work at Whitecross Street and Tofts Road, forming the first phase of a wider programme being delivered in stages across the town.

Alongside highway, crossing and junction improvements, the scheme will create safer and more accessible walking and cycling infrastructure aimed at improving connectivity and encouraging sustainable travel.

A new mobility hub will also be developed at Barton railway station, featuring upgraded paving, improved waiting facilities, covered cycle storage and additional passenger amenities.

Esh says it will use the programme to create social value opportunities focused on employment, skills, education and community investment.

David Player, construction manager at Esh Construction, which is headquartered in Bowburn, in County Durham, said: “The scale of the project in Barton is quite massive really but will transform the town.

“Working with North Lincolnshire Council we are looking forward to starting on site with the first phase of works.

“We appreciate there will be some level of disruption for residents and businesses, but we will endeavour to minimise this as we progress through the project.”

Residents and businesses will receive advance notice as work moves into different areas, while a dedicated Barton Improvements Hub will provide information about progress and upcoming activity.

The phased programme is designed to coordinate improvements across the town while helping minimise disruption as work progresses.

Councillor Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, added: “We’ve worked hard to secure the investment needed for Barton and it’s great to see the programme now moving into delivery. 

“These improvements will strengthen connections across the town and support Barton for years to come.”
