Artists invited to make their mark on Fitzwilliam

Street artists across Sheffield are being invited to help shape the look of a new city neighbourhood through a mural commission worth up to £9500.

Developer Capital&Centric has launched the opportunity at Fitzwilliam, its 192-home community taking shape in the heart of Sheffield.

The commission will see one local artist selected to create a pair of large-scale murals as part of the wider development.

Creatives from across the city are being invited to submit portfolios through Capital&Centric’s social media channels before the end of October, with previous mural experience not required.

Two shortlisted artists will each be paid to develop an initial concept, with no fixed format for their proposals.

One will then be chosen to deliver the final commission, with selection based on the strength and originality of applicants’ work.

Mark Edwards, development director at Capital&Centric, said: “We want to give someone the chance to make these spaces their own and Sheffield’s got a massive creative scene and loads of ridiculously talented artists.

“We’re keeping the brief deliberately open – we want to see how artists work, what they’re into and what they'd bring to Fitzwilliam. 

“We’ve worked with people like Phlegm before on another site in Sheffield and we’re proud of our track record working with artists.

“We’re looking for something with personality that feels at home in Sheffield and becomes part of the neighbourhood for years to come.”

The murals will form part of wider plans for Fitzwilliam, which include shared resident spaces, a landscaped courtyard and rooftop terrace, alongside space for an independent café or bar.

Plans also feature a new pedestrian route connecting Fitzwilliam Street with Capital&Centric’s neighbouring Eyewitness Works community.
