Howzat! Bus firm bats on for cricket team

A transport firm is batting on after extending a cricketing partnership.

Go North East has signed as Durham Visually Impaired Cricket Team’s shirt sponsor for a fourth consecutive year.

Bosses say the alliance will help continue funding away game transport, “removing a significant barrier for visually impaired players”.

The team is the county’s only visually impaired cricket side, and features players with partial or total sight loss who use adapted equipment including larger stumps and a ball that makes a sound.

Ben Gilligan, managing director at Go North East – whose parent firm Go-Ahead Group won an award at Bdaily publisher NET’s recent NET 250 ceremony – said: “We’re excited to continue supporting Durham Cricket Foundation's VI Team.”

He added Go North East’s elite bus driver training academy also works with Durham Visually Impaired Cricket Team player Jack Moffat, who is engagement manager for sight loss charity Thomas Pocklington Trust and delivers training sessions to help Go North East drivers better understand visually impaired passengers’ experiences.

Durham’s Visually Impaired Cricket Team is run and supported by Durham Cricket Foundation as part of its disability cricket programme.

Graeme Weeks, Durham Cricket Foundation chief executive, added: “We’re delighted to continue our partnership.

“Go North East’s support makes a real difference to our ability to provide opportunities for visually impaired players.”
