Historic Coventry buildings set for revival
A historic row of medieval buildings in Coventry city centre is set for a new lease of life after securing £500,000 in funding to support a restoration project.
Historic Coventry Trust has received the grant from the Architectural Heritage Fund’s Heritage Revival Fund to transform vacant buildings at 18–24 The Burges, including Palmer House.
The project will create 17 artists’ studios, six visitor accommodation flats and retail units, bringing currently unused space back into use and supporting the development of a creative community.
Funding will contribute towards architectural fees, surveys, project management, building repairs and refurbishment costs.
Work is scheduled to begin in February 2027, with completion expected in September 2027.
Dating back to the 13th century, The Burges is one of Coventry’s oldest surviving streets, with buildings reflecting its medieval origins.
The latest investment follows earlier regeneration work supported by Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zone, which helped restore 14 buildings and 16 shop fronts.
That programme received a commendation at the Royal Town Planning Institute’s West Midlands Best Project awards in 2023.
The new scheme aims to preserve the area’s historic character while creating opportunities for artists, businesses and visitors.
Ian Harrabin, chair of Historic Coventry Trust, said: “These are some of the oldest buildings left in Coventry and this grant will enable Historic Coventry Trust to repair these vitally important properties to a high standard.
“It is part of wider works going on in the Palmer Lane area to revitalise the whole area and bring energy back to this historic part of the city.
“We will save these buildings from further decay and provide much-needed space for Coventry artists as well as make it more attractive to visit.
“Putting studios in medieval buildings means history is kept alive and in use, and it brings creative people and visitors into the heart of the city.”
