Member news: The gamble paid off, now businesses need to get ‘in the zone’

The announcement that a record 12 sites in Teesside will benefit from Enterprise Zone status should be seen as a welcome boost, making the region an attractive location for businesses in theUKand further afield.

Tees Valley Unlimited (TVU), Teesside’s local enterprise partnership (LEP), who put forward what was seen by many as an ambitious proposal; requesting zone status for sites throughout its area, including Hartlepool, Billingham, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Darlington and Redcar.

Having so many locations was an unusual idea but one that has thankfully been embraced by the government. It ensures that benefits being given to these zones, such as tax breaks and fast-track planning, are spread around the region, with all five of the unitary authorities represented.

Sanderson Weatherall, represent a number of companies with property holdings in the proposed Zones and are looking forward positively to the benefits today’s announcement will have for the region with new companies being encouraged to relocate and expand.

It’s encouraging that the areas singled out in the plans already have many of the resources to accommodate specialist industries, including renewable energy, petro-chemical, advanced engineering, digital and other developing markets.

We’re waiting for further details to emerge but any incentives that help Teesside compete for business opportunities, secure existing jobs and attract new ones, can only be positive!
