Manor Walks celebrates 25 years with shoppers’ memories

Northumberland’s largest shopping centre, Manor Walks, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year by asking shoppers to send in their favourite memories of the mall, to be used as a giant piece of artwork in the centre.

Bosses at the shopping and leisure destination are urging local people to submit their memories of Manor Walks Shopping Centre over the last 25 years- whether it’s an anecdote, poem or photograph.

The ‘Manor Walks Memories’ will be collected and made into a mural journey from 1987 to the present day that will be displayed in a vacant shop unit within the centre.

The mural will be able to move around different parts of the centre to be a permanent piece of design for future generations to enjoy.

Manor Walks Shopping Centre general manager Bruno Coppola said: “Manor Walks’ silver anniversary is a tremendous occasion and one we want to share with our loyal public and shoppers. We have been at the heart of the Cramlington community for 25 years and we want the public to share with us how the centre has helped serve them over the years and what it means to them.

“We thought a nostalgic piece of artwork in the centre would be appropriate for a shopping centre that has had so much impact on the community over the years.

“Your ‘Manor Walks Memories’ can be submitted on our Facebook page, post, email or by directly hand delivering to the centre management suite.”

The South Mall was officially first opened by Sir Bobby Charlton and Mayor of Cramlington Walter Day in 1987. A penalty shootout style fanfare saw Sir Bobby kick a football through a goal post to mark the occasion and Manor Walks is especially keen to receive photos of this day.

Speaking of the 25thanniversary former Mayor Walter Day said: “One of favorite memories of Manor Walks Shopping Centre is the regular town fairs that used to take place on the land before ASDA was built. I am incredibly proud of what Manor Walks Shopping Centre has now become; it is impressive how much it has grown since then.

“When my wife and I walk round the centre nowadays we cannot believe the changes and the amount of different stores the centre now offers and of course the exciting plans that now lay ahead for the new cinema and restaurants. People in Cramlington should be proud to call this their town centre.”
