University of York turns attention to social enterprise
The University of York is one of a number of universities that will put social entrepreneurship at the heart of its teaching.
Developed in conjunction between social enterprise support charity, UnLtd and HEFCE, the programme aims to provide a catalyst for social venture activity, and raise the profile of social entrepreneurship throughout the higher education sector.
York is one of 56 higher education institutions to be involved with the programme, and will “embed” a culture of social entrepreneurship across staff and students.
The selected institutions will receive funding for an Awards pot for social venture creation, along with development support.
Andrew Ferguson from the University of York’s Careers Service co-ordinated the proposal, bringing together experience from across departments such as Social Policy, Biology and the York Management School.
Andrew said: “The HEFCE UnLtd programme will offer us access to a national network of institutions interested in this agenda as well as external expertise and a funding pot for staff and student initiatives.
“York has a great track record in engaging staff and students in tackling social issues in innovative ways and this support will enable us to both pick up the pace on this work as well as disseminate it effectively.”
