New international chairman for Chartered Institute of Marketing
The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) has appointed a North East business development and communications director as international chairman.
Andrew Harvey, who works for law firm Dickinson Dees has been elected for a two-year termOn his appointment, Mr Harvey said: “We have just completed our centenary year celebrations and now the CIM, which has a global role, must focus on how we can best support the marketing community during this very challenging period in business.
“We have over 40,000 members in 130 countries around the world, all of whom look to the Institute for their career development and to set marketing standards. Many of those membersuse their skills to market companies competing with our British companies, so no-one here canafford to be complaisant.
“I naturally have a special interest in the North East. Marketing has a vital role to play – both in building the businesses based in the region and in promoting the region itself. The region has undergone massive change in the past 20 to 30 years and the ‘new reality’ means many businesses in the region, and the people who work in those businesses, have got to get used to new ways of doing things, new media, new technology, new competitors.
“They have to accept that they are working on a world stage. Local customers cannot be taken as a fact. The new electronic and social media facilities and the Internet means even small companies based anywhere in the world will be chasing business right here in the North East.”
Andrew has previously worked in London, the Midlands and the North West, and went on to say that he believed marketing is at the heart of developing a strong business. The CIM delivers marketing training, with focus on digital development, and also conducts research and insight into industry issues.
