Marian is a cutz above the rest

A former civil servant has fulfilled her dream of becoming self employed after launching her own dog grooming business.

Marian Fairless from Peterlee has set up Mutz Cutz, which operates mobile throughout the East Durham area and offers services including a full body clip, head trim and a shape, foot shaping, nail clipping and eye and ear cleaning.

The married 52-year-old decided to pursue her ambition of working for herself when she left her job with HMRC earlier this year. After taking some time out to spend with friends and family, Marian signed up for a training programme at Houghall College in Durham to equip her with the qualifications needed to establish herself as a dog groomer.

Marian, who lives on Oakerside Park with her husband Dave, son Steven and 11-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Ted, said: “I love dogs and have always wanted to do something which involved working with them. But to go self employed is a big step and the time was just never quite right for me.

“When I left my last job I was lucky enough to be able to take time out for myself, to spend time with friends and family and think about what I wanted to do. And I just knew I had to go for it. So I signed up for the college course in March and at the start of November I set up Mutz Cutz.”

Marian, who has also spent time working in kennels at Coxhoe, invested in a vehicle to enable her to work mobile and a website and branding to promote Mutz Cutz and has already brought on board her first customers.

She added: “I am really enjoying running the business as it is what I’ve always wanted to do. It’s a completely diferent challenge and is so rewarding.

“I was over the moon when I got my first dogs to groom and now it’s a case of spreading the word and letting people in Peterlee and across East Durham know I’m here.”
