Tees Valley Unlimited To Hold Adult Skills Event

Tees Valley Unlimited, the local enterprise partnership for Tees Valley, has extended an open invitation to adult learners, job seekers and parents to attend a major skills symposium.

Tees Valley Skills - the largest skills event for those aged 14 plus in Tees Valley, will take place on Thursday December 6 at the Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough.

Tees Valley schools will attend the morning session, with the afternoon slot of 2pm to 6pm aimed at adult learners, job seekers and parents of those looking to understand career options and routes to employment.

The event is funded by The Skills Show, through the European Skills Fund.

Over 60 exhibitors will be demonstrating to would be employees the skills and qualifications needed to start a career in key Tees Valley sectors.

PD Ports, Darchem Engineering, INEOS, Nifco and Digital City are just some of the Tees Valley organisations taking part alongside the NHS, RAF, Royal Navy and National Skills Academy.

Attendees will be able to Have a Go at a new skill or activity with further help on hand to create personal development plans with independent advisors available to answer questions about qualifications, training, skills and job opportunities.

Tees Valley Unlimited Managing Director, Stephen Catchpole, said: “It is imperative that we engage with young people taking options or currently not in education, employment or training, and help them overcome any barriers they believe may be preventing them from making the most of their lives.

“The Tees Valley Skills event is a great opportunity for young people to speak to experts, who can inspire them about potential career paths and advise them how to gain confidence and ability necessary to secure employment.

“We also are encouraging parents to attend the event so they can equip themselves with the knowledge necessary to help and support their children in to the world of work.

“The event will showcase the very best Tees Valley has to offer regarding apprenticeships, training, further education and careers.”

Tees Valley Skills is being held in association with Stockton Riverside, Redcar and Cleveland, Darlington, Middlesbrough Colleges, World Skills, Tees Valley Learning Provider Network and Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community (MFCiC).

The event partners will be hosting a wide range of informative, interactive, thought provoking activities to stimulate people’s interest and increase their knowledge about a wide range of careers (See Notes to Editors for details).

Helena Pinder, MFCiC Community Manager, said: “Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community is pleased to be a partner of this event as it sees high value in events like this. MFCiC realises it is essential to prepare young people for a life of employment and provide them with the skills they require for this.

“As a charity, we are always willing to support employability events as we believe they can help direct young people in to careers they have never considered before.”

Jo Thompson, of Tees Valley Learning Provider Network Limited, said: “The event will use skills activities to provide an inspirational focus for vocational learning; we intend to offer interactive opportunities that are not available within the curriculum. Network members will be delivering ‘Have a Go’ activities on the day.”

Chief Executive of The Skills Show, Ross Maloney, commented: “It is clear that young Britons are keen to embrace all the learning and development opportunities open to them. The show provides the perfect forum for the talented young professionals of tomorrow to learn about and develop their own skills, as well as demonstrating their abilities to visitors and potential employers.”

Miriam Stanton, acting Principal at Stockton Riverside College, said: “This event is going to be a great opportunity for people of all ages to speak to our staff who can help them find the right course to become skilled for their ideal job. We work closely with employers in the region to ensure that our courses are relevant to the jobs that are available. There will be a lot of fun activities too, with ‘have a go’ activities and demonstrations which will give a flavour of the learning and skills future learners will get if they come to SRC.”
