Green initiative brings savings to St Ann's Quay

A green initiative at St Ann’s Quay in Newcastle has seen energy costs in the communal areas of its residential properties reduced by more than 30%.

Directors of St Ann’s Quay Management Limited, which represents residents, took the decision to replace a third of the communal light fittings to LED to assess the cost saving potential.

The electrical units used have reduced by at least 30% giving a significant saving in energy bills, reflected by a reduction in service charge to residents.

The trial has proved so successful that plans are in place to replace all remaining interior and exterior lights with a projected saving of up to 95% in the energy bills.

Louise Richley, director of St Ann’s Quay Management Limited and CEO of Beyond Digital Solutions Limited said: “Energy bills account for a major part of the expenditure for the development and we have been exploring ways to both reduce costs, but also improve our green credentials.

“Fitting LED lighting in selected areas has achieved significant results and encouraged us to continue the project to embrace all the communal areas. This has the two-fold benefit of reducing the service charge for all residents and helping to protect the environment by decreasing the amount of energy the development consumes.

“The principles I adhere to running a successful and profitable business equally apply to representing the residents at St Anns Quay in the management of the development. Saving money and reducing the carbon footprint should be a key target for all organisations”

Colin Ord, director of Kingston Property Services (KSP), which manages St Ann’s Quay, said: “The resident management company initiative to replace the lighting at St Ann’s Quay has proved incredibly successful. Working in partnership with them to further enhance the quality of life for the residents is very rewarding and I am certain that on completion this project will save a lot of money.”
