Is the self-employment boom masking unemployment?

As the number of self-employed people appears to have risen considerably, what does this mean for the workforce?

Some commentators have suggest that bogus self-employment classification is masking poor labour market conditions.

Frances O’Grady of TUC said it would naive to think this section of the workforce are all “budding entrepreneurs.”

Are more people turning to freelance, odd-jobbing and short term contracts due to a lack of permanent positions, or is this simply a changing dynamic of the labour market?
