Lancashire manufacturer develops life-saving needle
Darwen-based company C-Major has received support from the North West leg of the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) to develop an innovative new medical needle.
C-Major has said its new design could help to prevent the spread of life-endangering diseases, such as HIV and Hepatitis B, across the globe.
The business has created and applied for patents for the new design of hypodermic devices that eliminate needle stick injuries and the accidental transfer of blood born infections.
C-Major hope to launch the product in 2014 with its injection-moulded design they developed alongside MAS, who offered guidance throughout the product testing process.
Funding from MAS allowed the firm to invest in new tools which they used to mould a complex shape for the needles in a two-part construction.
Steve Dobson from C-Major commented: “Our new sharps design has huge potential – from making everyday needle use much safer to preventing the spread of deadly diseases the world over.
“We are now looking to talk with potential distributors and an investor in preparation for the next phase of product development.
“The potential market for these unique designs is huge and will create hundreds of jobs and be worth millions to the UK economy.
“Without the support we’ve received from MAS we would have had to opt for a cheaper prototype which wouldn’t have held up to mass production testing so we might have fallen at the first hurdle.”
MAS advisor Nick Brandwood added: “This is a really exciting opportunity for C-Major and MAS is proud to have been involved.
“C-Major was at a pivotal stage in their product development and needed to have the funding available quickly, which we were able to do in three days.
“We are now looking to fund a third tooling project with C-Major and to help them achieve what could be huge business growth potential.”
