Made in Yorkshire ? World Chess Championship Set

A specialist Yorkshire company will be showcased when the final of the World Chess Championship 2013 is held in November.

One of the UK’s oldest and most respected traditional games companies, Kingston upon Hull-based Studio Anne Carlton (SAC), has been appointed by Agon as the official manufacturer and distributor of the World Chess Federation-approved World Chess Championship Chess Set.

The official World Chess Championship Chess Set was unveiled at the launch of the World Chess Championship London Candidates Tournament during March this year.

The Championship Set represents an “inspired” collaboration between Agon, architect and industrial designer Daniel Weil (of Pentagram Design) and Studio Anne Carlton.

Established in 1969 as Studio Anne Carlton, the SAC Chess Set brand now lists over 200 chess sets and family games in the current range.

Studio Anne Carlton managing director, Michael Lee, commented: “Thanks to Agon, World Chess is on the cusp of a new era, set to reignite global audiences and inspire a new generation.

“The Championship Chess Set is the flagship product that is intended to be used in all Championship events and Daniel Weil is a true grandmaster when it comes to the design.

“Studio Anne Carlton is delighted to have been appointed the official manufacturer and distributor and we are already working with Daniel to extend the range.”

The World Chess Championship 2013 will be a match between the World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand (last year’s winner) and Norwegian grandmaster and world number one, Magnus Carlsen. Anand is hoping it will be held on his home turf in India from 6 to 26 November 2013 but New York is also being considered.
