Business leaders form EU lobby group
A group of business leaders have formed a lobby group to push the Government into renegotiation of the UK’s relationship with the EU.
Business for Britain is co-chaired by Alan Halsall of pram firm, Silver Cross, and John Mills, who is also chairman of TV shopping brand JML.
The group’s chief executive is Matthew Elliott, the man behind other campaigning bodies such as the TaxPayer’s Alliance and Big Brother Watch.
In a mission statement, the new group say: “As business leaders and entrepreneurs responsible for millions of British jobs, we believe that the Government is right to seek a new deal for the EU and for the UK’s role in Europe.
“We believe that, far from being a threat to our economic interests, a flexible, competitive Europe, with more powers devolved from Brussels, is essential for growth, jobs and access to markets. We therefore urge all political parties to join in committing themselves to a national drive to renegotiate the terms of Britain’s membership of the EU.”
Business for Britain are backing David Cameron’s five principles along which EU reform should run, including: competitiveness; flexibility; powers flowing back to the Member-States; democratic accountability; and fairness.
