The coffee phenomenon: what's next?

It could be one of the last decade’s biggest business success stories: the explosion of high street coffee consumption. Branded coffee chains in particular have enjoyed huge growth as consumers continue to splash on takeaway coffee.

This week Whitbread show another promising set of results, attributable not least, to their Costa coffee brand. Some commentators suggest that Costa has benefited from the Starbucks tax furore.

As the coffee consumer base expands, the competition between brands steps up a gear. Now multinationals vie for sales on pricing, and product innovation, and independents aim to compete on quality and authenticity.

Allegra Strategies’ most recent European coffee shop market report, published in 2012, pointed to further growth - an expected £8bn turnover by 2017. So, what’s the next coffee style retail phenomenon?
