Spire makes top 10 for patient health gain
The North East’s Spire Washington Hospital has been listed within the top ten health providers in the country for health gain in patients who have had hip or knee surgery.
The hospital was ranked fifth in the league for primary hip replacement and sixth for knee replacements in the Patient Recorded Outcome Measures (PROMS) data published annually by the NHS Partners Network.
According to the National Joint Registry, around 160,000 total hip and knee replacements are performed each year across England and Wales. This number is set to double over the next decade, in part due to an ageing population, but also better prognosis and the procedures being carried out at an earlier stage than in the past.
This is not the first time that Spire Washington Hospital has performed well on a national level – it is also listed on the Dr Foster Hospital Guide as one of the best providers of hip and knee replacement surgery in England.
Mandy Cassidy, clinical governance lead at Spire Washington Hospital explained: “PROMS are an important measure and look at the improvement in quality of life following surgery as judged by patients themselves.
“Those due to undergo a hip or knee replacement complete a PROMS survey about their health before and after the procedure. Details such as mobility, self-care, pain and depression are all included.
“Bearing in mind the large number of NHS and independent hospitals that carry out hip and knee replacements, we are extremely pleased to have performed so strongly. We believe the results are testament to the ongoing investment into our facilities, our continued focus on clinical governance and the hard work of the talented and expert team here at the hospital.”
