Barnsley commercial photographer zooms in on business success

A photography business, which specialises in at-home family portraits, is growing after receiving much-needed set up support.

Amy Law founded Amy Law Photography two years ago and sought support from SmartStart business mentors at Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre (BBIC).

Since launching last year SmartStart has had over 350 business enquiries and more than 150 start-up businesses have attended monthly open days.

The former trainee jockey and dog grooming apprentice had always had a passion for photography but needed help to turn her dream into reality.

“Setting up a business can be quite daunting,” explained Amy, 22, from Athersley, Barnsley.

“It can also be quite lonely. Through SmartStart I’ve received free business support and help with my website and now I’ve moved into the GENESIS workspace at the BBIC in order to grow my business.”

Amy was training to be a jockey at Northern Racing College in Doncaster but realised it wasn’t for her.

She then spent two enjoyable years as an apprentice dog groomer at Pets at Home and still offers mobile grooming services.

Amy, who is a co-founder of Barnsley Photographic Club, specialises in family portraits but also photographs events and weddings.

Lyndsey Maw, operations manager at BBIC, added: “Amy is a very talented photographer and her business idea was solid.

“We were particularly impressed with Amy’s progress throughout the Smartstart process and following completion of the programme, offered Amy a place on the GENESIS programme at BBIC to accelerate the development and growth of her business.”
