Rotherham retail site planning application secures interest from Aldi

Gregory Projects has submitted a planning application to develop a 3.87 acre site adjoining Parkgate Town Centre in Rotherham for retail and leisure use.

The firm has also confirmed that, subject to planning, discount food store Aldi has committed to open a new 16,500 sq ft store within the scheme.

The proposed letting to Aldi fulfils a local need for an easily accessible discount food store as this was ‘lost’ to the community when the original Netto store was overtaken over by ASDA.

Gregory’s plan will also complement and significantly enhance the existing food and non-food provision for the community living close to Broad Street and Great Eastern Way.

Gregory Projects is working in collaboration with landowner and local business Ron Hull Jnr Limited to secure approval to deliver the discount food store together with 30,000 sq ft of additional retail and leisure facilities along with 194 car parking spaces.

The site, at the corner of Broad Street (A633) and Great Eastern Way (A6123) is just one mile from Rotherham town centre and was formerly owned by Pendragon, operating as a car showroom.

The site was remediated twelve months ago and has been vacant since.

Richard Tovey, director at Gregory Projects, said: “Our plans propose to bring a redundant ‘key’ site back into use after such a long while. It has been earmarked for mixed-use and our plans are in response to market demand.

“The occupiers that have expressed an interest will benefit Parkgate by enhancing the comparison shopping on offer.

“The scheme has good pedestrian links to the town centre and to an existing bus stop at Broad Street, which makes the site accessible to local residents and commuters alike.”

The Leeds office of Colliers International is handling the planning process and Leeds-based civil and structural engineering firm JPG has also been appointed to the project.

GVA in Leeds is advising Gregory Projects on the lettings and the Sheffield office of Knight Frank is acting for Ron Hull Jnr Limited.
