Specialist Cumbrian housing schemes clinch financial support

Two specialist affordable housing schemes in west Cumbria have won £660,000 in financial support.

Cumbria County Coucil has confirmed funding for the two developments - £500,000 towards a £4.2m, 42-home scheme in Wigton, and £160,000 toward a £1.3m, 13-home scheme in Maryport.

Both developments will be run by affordable housing provider Home Group. Each scheme is designed with care needs in mind offering modern, accessible environments that promote safety and independence.

In Wigton, the properties will be one- and two-bedroom self-contained flats. Nine of the flats will be for people with learning disabilities or autism with the remaining flats for those aged over 55, or those under 55 with a disability.

In Maryport, the new homes will support service men and women who are leaving the armed forces and returning to civilian life, in keeping with the council’s commitment to the Armed Forces Community Covenant. The service will focus on supporting younger veterans who need help with independent living skills, finding employment and accessing permanent accommodation.

Councillor Beth Furneaux, Cabinet member for Adults and Local Services, said: “Both of these schemes are excellent and I’m proud to have the county council supporting it.

“The Maryport development is a first for Cumbria - it’s for younger people who need support to settle into civilian life and access employment after service.

“The scheme in Wigton, as with other housing with support schemes, will ensure people get the care and support they deserve in the decades to come. People tell us that they want to continue to live independently for as long as possible, and this is how we can support people to do this.”
