JC&C secure £3 million worth of contracts

A North East construction and civil engineering company, which doubled turnover in the past year, has secured four contracts worth almost £3 million.

The work has secured the jobs of 40 people at Northumberland based JC&C and created new on site opportunities which are being filled through a recruitment drive.

Said Director Chris Joyce: “We are delighted to have secured this new work right at the start of our new financial year. Our investment to expand the business and bring in new skills has certainly paid dividends.”

The contracts comprise £1 million worth of site preparation work and drainage on the Newcastle Science City development at Science Central in Newcastle, on behalf of Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd; the foundations, slabs, roads and sewer works to the value of £750k for Surgo Construction at the new GoAhead depot at Dunston; ground works, foundations, drainage and landscaping for first time client - Kier - on the Longbenton School project and similar works on an affordable homes scheme in Middlebrough on behalf of Mansells. These two projects are worth just over £1 million.

Having turned over £7.5 million in the last financial year - which ended in July - the new business sees JC&C make a flying start to 2013/14. Turnover in 2011/12 was £2.9 million.

It is just 18 months since the company moved into new, self-built headquarters, on the site of the former Dilston Sawmill, just outside Corbridge. The £1 million move, from Tinklers Yard in Corbridge was masterminded by Chris with brothers Miles and John, who jointly own the firm their father started in 1948.

Historically a drainage business, the civil engineering skills which JC&C has added to its portfolio were key to winning the latest contracts, as well as other significant work with Sir Robert McAlpine at Akzo Nobel in Ashington, Ringway/ Eurovia Group at Doxford link road, Laing O`Rourke at Ryhope Hospital and the RVI redevelopment in Newcastle.

Not surprisingly, a business which a little over a year ago employed 30 people now has over 100 employed throughout the North East.
