Durham nursery set to open in new year
A new Durham nursery with music at its heart has been officially launched by Dr Roberta Blackman-Woods MP and had over 30 enquiries within 24 hours of the event.
Do Re Mi has been established by leading education and music specialist, Dr Jane Todd, with support from Transmit Start-Ups. The £9,500 loan the nursery received from Transmit has gone towards equipment, marketing, a website and promotional literature.
The nursery, which has 39 places, will open from 2 January and is based on the Meadowfield Industrial Estate, near Durham City. As well as nursery care, Do Re Mi already offers musical learning classes and aims to help young children reach their musical potential, right from babies in the womb to seven years old.
Jane Todd, who has a First Class Degree in Music Education and a Doctorate from Durham University said: “I realised there was a need for a centre of musical excellence providing quality musical experiences for young children in Durham.
“This business is fantastic for me as it joins together my passion for children, music and education and also enables me to see my academic research in practice. I want the children in the nursery and those taking the music sessions to enjoy using their voices as instruments and have fun through musical learning. My aim is also to create eight jobs within the first year.”
Roberta Blackman-Woods, MP for the City of Durham, said: “I am delighted to open this innovative new day nursery that aims to help children develop an early interest in music. It is important that we have high quality and affordable child care across the city to help support more parents return to work. The nursery is sited very well to cater for the needs of parents and it is very entrepreneurial to have it on the Meadowfield Industrial Estate. I look forward to visiting the nursery again in the New Year .”
Rich Myers, director, Transmit Start Ups said: “Music has played a huge part in my own career and it is great to be able to support Jane’s business which will give children the chance to really enjoy all types of music from such a young age.”
There has been national interest in the nursery from specialist music education media and Jane has spoken about it at the National Conference of Music Educators in Manchester.
