Barnsley construction company nearly doubles turnover and is set to expand further

Barnsley construction company Cidon has increased its turnover from £7m to £13m in the last two years is primed for further specialist growth.

Cidon, based at Platts Common, Barnsley, is set to take full advantage of the recovering construction market by increasing its work as a principal contractor after investing in recruitment of high level staff and training.

Recent builds as a principal contractor include a new build luxury residential development at the former Sawmill site in Penistone; a design and build development with Campbell Homes in Sheffield; and a mixed use development on a brownfield site at Ecclesall Road.

Cidon’s growth has been supported by Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre through the Enterprising Barnsley programme which has funding support from Barnsley Council. Business support specialists have worked with Cidon’s management team on HR and marketing functions.

Ciaran Donnelly, managing director, said: “Cidon has been successfully delivering projects since 2000 and although our core business is the construction of concrete building and civil engineering structures, we believe there is an opportunity to deliver complete build packages in key sectors.

“The construction market is recovering at a rapid speed. We are working more and more as a principal contractor and these are very exciting times for the business.”

A well-established and experienced company, Cidon’s growth in recent years has been remarkable. As well as increasing turnover by over 85% in the last two years, the company has grown its staff to 150.

“The company has recruited strategically over the last 12 months bringing in substantial experience in the surveying and management divisions of the business from a principal contracting background.

Ciaran added: “Our solid reputation as a reliable, efficient provider is offering us opportunities throughout the UK, and our staff are tremendously important to us.

“Last year we invested £100,000 in HR and training and we’ve found this investment has allowed us to develop our workforce and ensure we recruit and retain the best people in the industry.

“We’re also one of the few companies using the 3D modelling software Tekla Structures which has improved efficiency and reduced site errors.”

“As we’ve grown we’ve found the support from Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre through the Enterprising Barnsley programme particularly helpful.”

Kevin Steel, business development manager at Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre (BBIC) which is managing the programme, said: “The construction sector has had a difficult time during the recession but the growth experienced by Cidon shows the sector is well on the way to recovery.”

Other Cidon projects include The Reid Building (not the Seona Reid Building) and it is replacement for old parts of the Garnethill campus that were no longer fit for purpose, designed by New York architect Stephen Holl and a new 5-level multi-storey car park to Blackpool’s Victoria Hospital.

Other recent project awards include the fourth phase on the prestigious Quartermile development in Edinburgh, the new Edinburgh Mercure Hotel, and phase two of the new Ferrybridge Energy from Waste Facility.
