Pioneering North East packaging recovery firm donates its award winnings

A flourishing, Teesside based packaging recovery firm has decided upon a local school that will receive its prize money, to enable environmental projects.

The eco-friendly firm, Returnable Packaging Services Limited (RPS) won £2,000 to donate to a school of its choice, after championing the BOC Industrial Environmental Award at the NEPIC Awards 2014.

RPS was recognised by NEPIC and its industry peers, for its dedicated approach to reducing its waste footprint through sustainable methods and decided to donate the funds to Marwood Church of England Infant School, in Great Ayton.

Thomas Hudson, marketing and communications manager at RPS, said: “We feel so proud to have won this honourable award and it’s great we’re being acknowledged for the hard work we put in to achieve a zero waste status.

“We decided to donate our award winnings to Marwood Church of England as our team members are familiar with it and as it’s a small school of just under 60 pupils, we knew the £2,000 would have a positive impact.”

With the money, the infant school plans to pursue environmental projects, such as investing in a ‘grow it yourself’ area to educate the children about the importance of eating fruit and vegetables.

In addition, a wildlife garden will be constructed to help encourage the children to spend more time outdoors and teach them the importance of conservation.

Celia Wilson, head teacher at the school, said: “We were so surprised and delighted to receive such a large donation and we’re extremely grateful!

“We have wanted to develop a wildlife garden for some time now, but due to a shortage of funds this wasn’t possible. It’s fantastic we’re now in a position to get the children involved in the project.”

In other exciting news, RPS has also been shortlisted for the North East Business Awards, Low Carbon, Environment and Corporate Responsibility Award, where the winner will be announced at Teesside University, on Thursday 3rd April 2014.

RPS is the UK’s leading packaging recovery experts and is committed to offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly service.
