Is your boss a hypnotist?

If your life has become routine, you’re probably in trance without even realising it. Dictionary.com defines hypnosis as ‘an artificially induced trance state’ this comes from sitting down in front of a hypnotist or simply going through the same routine, over and over.

Your mind looks for patterns in all that you do and as soon as possible, tasks are handed over to be unconsciously taken care of. It’s part of a generalisation pattern that takes our learning and generalises it forwards in time. You can recognise it by listening out for sentences like:

“We’ve always done it this way”

“We’ve tried everything”

“There’s nothing we can do”

“It never changes around here”

“That’s just the way it is!”

Does any of the above ring a bell for you? The people using these statements are actually saying: “I am working in a hypnotic environment, all change will be taken as a threat and you will be exterminated!!!” (Sorry about the last bit, but I have been watching my Dr Who box set!)

Giving permission to be hypnotised

If you have ever attended a stage hypnosis show, the whole principal is built upon you handing over your free will. Basically, you buy a ticket, you turn up, you get a good seat and guess what…? You get to run around like a chicken. Now let’s look at the dysfunctional work place scenario…

You agree to come to work for the company, you agree to do X for a set number of hours, you agree to behave a certain way, dress a certain way, in other words, you get to run around like a chicken. All of you dancing to the company tune (hypnotist). From the point of view of stage hypnosis, you have accepted the key ingredients for you to become a compliant participant, erm…! I mean a conscientious employee.

Therefore, if you are operating within a dysfunctional work place, you are in an ‘artificially induced’ environment, which will give rise to trance like behaviours and low productivity. You don’t need to go to sleep to be in a trance, as many people who travel to work on the bus or train will testify, or perhaps if you drive you might simply arrive without noticing the journey. Yes, even driving is hypnotic!
