£15 million cash boost for South Tyneside homes
A cash boost of £15 million will go towards giving South Tyneside homes a facelift.
Funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has been handed to South Tyneside Council, as part of the Decent Homes programme.
The Borough was originally given £12 million to refurbish 1365 properties during 2014 -15.
Now the HCA has given the Council an additional £15 million to spend on a further 1706 homes.
Councillor Allan West, Lead Member for Housing and Transport, said: “This is excellent news and will allow us and South Tyneside Homes to build on the fantastic work that’s already been done under the Decent Homes programme.
“Providing good quality housing is one of the most essential services we offer and we are proud of how we have improved the Borough’s housing stock.
“Thousands of residents’ lives have already been enhanced by these modernisations and upgrades and we are delighted that we can extend that further.”
The latest phase of the programme is due to be completed by 2016.
In 2008, South Tyneside Homes began an eight-year programme to renew over 18,000 homes to the Decent Homes standard on behalf of the Council.
