Abseil charity boost

A leading regional charity has challenged intrepid West Midlanders to step off the top of Dudley Castle!

Beacon, based at Sedgley, is inviting brave souls to abseil from the 70ft tall tower on September 28 to raise funds for local people living with sight loss.

Amongst those taking part will be three women from Wolverhampton’s Connect PR agency.

Account director Caroline Garbett, junior account executive Kate Sanders and finance manager Jackie Winfield will take a day off from managing the charity’s publicity to scale the walls of the 10th Century castle.

Caroline said: “Connect started working with Beacon almost a year ago and, in that time, we have been inspired by the way the charity transforms the day-to-day lives of local people.

“Abseiling from Dudley Castle will be a real leap of faith for us, but we are excited to be helping raise awareness of Beacon and support its fundraising activity.”

Five time slots are available during the day and participants are asked to pay £10 to register and commit to raising at least £75 in sponsorship. Anyone over the age of ten can take part, with under-18s needing a signed letter of consent from their parent or guardian.

Kelly Vickers, fundraising and events officer at Beacon, added: “We’re always looking for fun and different ways to raise money for the charity and we’re sure this daunting challenge will be successful.

“Abseiling is an exhilarating activity to take part in and we’re offering five timeslots during the day to ensure that everyone who is keen to take part has the chance.

“As most people will know however abseiling is a hazardous activity and unfortunately anyone with cardiovascular or respiratory problems or epilepsy will be unable to take part.”

Beacon helps people with sight loss in the West Midlands live fuller and more independent lives by offering them the finest facilities and support, from providing advice to helping find permanent accommodation in Wolverhampton.

It also runs initiatives which support adults living with sight loss to take part in a broad range of leisure activities in a safe environment to raise their confidence levels.
