National award for Stockport’s apprenticeship service

Stockport Council has won national recognition for the quality of its apprenticeship service.

The authority won the National Apprenticeship Service’s North West – Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Staffordshire - Regional Award for Macro Employer (over 4,999 employees) of apprentices.

The award recognises the council’s achievements of employing apprentices at Levels 2-5, in Business Administration, Management, Creative Design and Digital Media, Customer Service, and Supporting Teaching and Learning.

Councillor Shan Alexander, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Leaning and Achievement, said: “The Council is proud of its track record on apprenticeships and I’m delighted that we have won this award for the second time.

“It is good to be recognised for excelling in this work in the Greater Manchester and surrounding region.

“The Council’s 14-19 Services team has led the way in multi-agency partnership working between young people, employers, Jobcentreplus, National Careers Service and Training Providers, creating the Council’s Apprenticeships Store and employer grant schemes.

“We have also helped to introduce new employers in the borough to apprenticeships so that they are inspired to generate opportunities for would-be apprenticeships.”

In presenting the award, Claire Blott, Deputy Director of Employer and Provider Services, from the National Apprenticeships Service, said: “We recognise that Stockport Council is committed to investing in Apprenticeships locally, through a variety of innovative programmes, both internally and externally, including its Supported Apprenticeship Scheme for Children in Care, and its trailblazing Apprenticeships Store for would-be apprentices and employers.”
