North Tyneside Council to provide further Wallsend housing regeneration

More new homes are on the way for Wallsend, as part of North Tyneside Council’s ongoing drive to regenerate the town centre.

The council’s planning committee has approved plans to demolish the former Wallsend Police Station and Alexandra Street Family Centre, to make way for 41 new affordable homes.

The authority now plans to use the site, along with and the nearby High Street East car park, for the new housing development which will feature 12 two-bedroom houses, 13 three-bedroom houses, 12 two-bedroom apartments and four one-bedroom apartments, complete with landscaping and parking.

Local residents and businesses have been consulted on the plans, which will not only regenerate the area but also contribute to the council’s work to deliver more quality places to live at affordable prices.

Once complete, the homes will be available for rent through North Tyneside Homes.

Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn, said: “These are crucial next steps in what are milestone projects for affordable housing in Wallsend.

“The demand for housing in North Tyneside is increasing every year and many families, as well as younger and older people, are finding it difficult to find suitable, quality places to live at prices they can afford.

“I’m delighted that this work is now going ahead because when I was elected in May 2013 I promised that affordable housing would be a top priority for the council and that we would work with our partners to find new ways to tackle this issue.

“I remain determined to cut the Council housing list by narrowing the gap between the housing that’s available for rent and the needs of local people.”
