Schoolchildren learn about biodiversity at TT2 activity day

School children from across North and South Tyneside are learning about the importance of biodiversity in the form of an educational and fun-filled project.

Heart Land Design, which specialises in landscape architecture and urban planning, has been commissioned by TT2 limited – the operator of the Tyne Tunnels - for the project, which aims to engage schoolchildren in biodiversity related activities as well as learn about the history of the Tyne Tunnel site.

Activities range from wildlife surveys and den building to learning how to design and create woodland and wetland habitats, as well as documenting the project with the use of photography and video.

The first activity day marked the start of a project, which will run until June 2015, and will involve schools from within the North and South Tyneside Council areas. As well as Newcastle Council, North and South Tyneside councils, a number of organisations are also involved, including Newcastle Science City, South Tyneside Homes, construction and development specialist Southdale Ltd, School Grounds NE, Northumbria University, East Durham College, Kirkley Hall College, and Olivers Tree Services.

Tamsin Harrison, of Heart Land Design, said: “This project gives children an insight into the processes of landscaping and biodiversity with practical and exciting activities such as den building and creating various habitats. I am delighted that TT2 has commissioned the project, as it will be beneficial to students’ own school studies and help broaden their knowledge.

“We intend to introduce urban bees to the area later this year, which will help children learn about their role in the ecosystem and care for them. There is potential to expand the project further, and I am looking forward to the initial activity day.”

Rachel Turnbull, chief executive of TT2, said: “The biodiversity project is an excellent initiative and is both a fun and an educational tool for school children in the area. I am delighted to have Heart Land Design on board for the project, as its expertise will give children an insight into the geography and science of the area, as well as assist with their own school studies.”
