Deafness charity calls local businesses to support groundbreaking research
A clothes amnesty has begun across the North West and local businesses are being asked to become ‘donation stations’ for leading regional charity Deafness Support Network (DSN).
DSN, which supports more than 80,000 deaf and hard of hearing individuals across Cheshire, has launched an amnesty to support its opening of a pop-up shop, which will begin trading at The Forum Shopping Centre, Chester, on 14th of November.
The shop will run for six weeks to raise funds for DSN’s national research campaign into links between dementia and deafness named ‘Bags of Memory’. The charity is backing one of its volunteers to undertake the initiative, a three-year PhD to conduct trailblazing research to further understand the links between deafness and dementia, namely trying to prevent social isolation a common factor that leads to decreased quality of life for people with both.
To ensure stock is plentiful and as fashion-forward as possible, DSN is calling on all local business to host its donation bags and drive contributions.
Local ladies are being ask to donate handbags and gladrags from their wardrobes: anything from purses to pendants, scarves to satchels, and all women’s accessories are more than welcome.
Gill Reeder, Operations Manager at DSN, said: “We’re really excited to be launching our very own mini shop this Autumn to generate funds to keep expanding our services into 2015. The North West is full of fashionistas, so we hope they will dig deep and provide us with some of their loved but no longer needed items.
“We are calling upon local businesses throughout the North West to host our special bins to generate donations from their staff, friends and family alike.
“With the weather turning cooler, this is the perfect time to have a good old clear out, the staff at DSN have already undergone their de-clutter and we have plenty of fantastic items to start our stock, but plenty more is required, so we can’t wait to be overwhelmed by accessories – a woman’s paradise!”
All local businesses that are keen to get involved and become a ‘donation station’ can email shalliwell@dsnonline.co.uk or call 07851 926376 to register their interest. DSN will do the rest, providing a donation bin and even collecting items once full.
