Taylor&Emmet sponsorship gains artist’s approval

Sheffield’s Taylor&Emmet LLP is celebrating the start of its partnership with the city’s galleries and museums with help from a very special guest.

Renowned local artist, Joe Scarborough, visited the solicitors to view one of his paintings, currently on display at the firm’s headquarters courtesy of Museums Sheffield.

Taylor&Emmet has three works by local artists on loan from the trust as part of its sponsorship of the forthcoming Stanley Royle exhibition, opening at the Graves Gallery on December 13. They include Mr Scarborough’s 1974 “Pub Interior” along with Stanhope Alexander Forbes’ “Sheffield – River and Smoking Chimneys” from 1915 and “Sheffield Cathedral” by Stephen Bone.

Joe was the guest of honour at a reception held for Taylor&Emmet staff, at which members of Museums Sheffield’s curatorial team introduced the three works of art and explained more about the forthcoming retrospective of Stanley Royle’s work (1888-1961) – the first in almost 30 years.

Taylor&Emmet has a close association with Joe Scarborough, having commissioned him to depict its 150 year history in 2007. The image shows the firm’s current premises on Arundel Gate and former offices on Norfolk Row, alongside iconic Sheffield landmarks. The original painting has hung in reception since its creation and now sits alongside the work from Museums Sheffield’s collection.

Claire Fletcher, Taylor&Emmet’s marketing coordinator, said: “We were thrilled Joe was able to attend our curatorial talk by Museums Sheffield and we cannot thank him enough for showing such interest in our sponsorship. “Pub Interior” is so striking visitors never fail to comment on it and it was fascinating to hear firsthand how the image was conceived.”

The Great Outdoors – Paintings by Stanley Royle will run from December 13 to May 30 next year. It will showcase Sheffield’s collection of works by the landscape artist, many of which depict the city and surrounding countryside.
