Baroness Lawrence to deliver first guest lecture in the north

Campaigner Baroness Doreen Lawrence, OBE, will deliver her first public lecture in the north on social justice and education at Leeds Trinity University on Thursday (13 November).

Baroness Lawrence, who received her OBE in 2003, will share her story to a sold out audience at Leeds Trinity University, including the case surrounding the murder of her son Stephen in 1993. She will discuss social justice and the importance of black history in society and share the work of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, which aims to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people while also striving for social change.

Speaking about the lecture, Leeds Trinity University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret House, said: “Following the racist attack against her son Stephen more than 20 years ago, Baroness Lawrence has worked tirelessly to promote social justice. We’re honoured and very proud to be welcoming Doreen to the University – she’s a true inspiration and is guaranteed to provide a thought-provoking and motivational lecture.”

The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust was set up in 1998 by Stephen’s parents, Doreen and Neville Lawrence. They wanted to ensure that future generations of young people would enjoy the opportunities that were denied to Stephen by his senseless murder.

Speaking about her upcoming lecture at Leeds Trinity University, Baroness Lawrence commented: “It is a privilege to be invited to Leeds Trinity University and I hope others who may have been victims of institutional injustice can draw some strength from my experience to continue fighting.”
