North Tyneside Council complete £3 million roads programme
North Tyneside Council’s £3 million annual roads resurfacing and maintenance programme has been completed.
In total, around a quarter of a million square metres of road has been treated on the network, stretching nearly 21 miles.
A large amount of work has been preventative maintenance, to extend the life of roads and avoid the need for much costlier major repairs further down the line.
Councillor John Harrison, Cabinet Member for Housing and Environment, said: “This major programme of maintenance work means our road network is well prepared for winter.
“Our highways team will continue to monitor the borough’s roads and pavements for signs of wear and react quickly to repair these.”
Funded by the local authority and a number of Department for Transport grants, work was carried out by Capita - the council’s technical services partner.
During the winter months, the focus will turn to reactive maintenance and dealing with any potholes appearing as a result of icy conditions. Highways inspectors will keep an eye on key routes and the frontline repair teams will complete any repairs in as short a time as possible.
