Former Terry’s chocolate factory in York set to receive approval for nearly 250 homes

A residential development by David Wilson Homes is set to see 229 new homes built on the former Terry’s chocolate factory site in York.

Officers are recommending that City of York Council’s planning committee approves the plans when it meets next week.

The Chocolate Works proposals will deliver new homes, including affordable homes, on an important brownfield site in the city. Work on phase one of the housing scheme is already well under way.

If approved, the final phase of homes will comprise one and two-bed apartments and two, three and four bed houses.

David Wilson Homes’ development director, Peter Morris said: “There is a huge demand for new homes in York. With uncertainty over the future of new schemes while councillors strive to agree a local plan, it is vital that we quickly develop brownfield sites like this to provide the new homes local people need.

“We’ve worked closely with the council’s officers and the local community forum to address the concerns neighbours had voiced about earlier plans.

“As a result, we have reduced the total number of homes, retained more trees around the site, increased the screening from existing dwellings and reduced the heights of some of the apartment blocks.

“Throughout the process we have maintained a dialogue with neighbours and with council officers, conservation and other groups in the city.

“Understanding the importance of this site and its history, we have engaged one of the UK’s leading architects to design the scheme which fully respects the historic listed buildings on the rest of the Chocolate Works site. We very much hope that councillors will approve our plans so we can make new homes available very soon.”
