How to create eye-catching and engaging online advertising

Whether you’re using Google Adsense to promote your business, or you are taking a more local approach with Bdaily, ensuring your ads stand out from the crowd can be tough. Here are a few tips and tricks we’ve picked up while providing digital marketing solutions for businesses across a broad range of sectors.

1. Stick to this simple formula

The most important aspect of creating an ad is delivering the campaign’s message in a succinct, concise way. The four main things to include are the business name, the subheading or campaign slogan and the Call to Action. For example, if you are holding an event, rather than inserting the full details into a small space, you can simply mention the city/region, e.g. : “Business networking events in Newcastle”. If the user is insterested, they will the clikc the ad for more details. As for your CTA, there’s no need to put “click here” as it’s widely believed that users are now sufficiently aware of what to do with online advertising; alternatively, something more conversational has proven effective with our clients, e.g. : “Start networking today!”

2. Research sizes

Before you begin designing the ad, be sure to research common sizes. According to Google Adsense, the most popular ad sizes are:

336×280 Large Rectangle

300×250 Medium Rectangle

728×90 Leaderboard

120×600 Skyscraper

3. Don’t cram too much in a small space

This goes for both words and images; the simpler the better. If you are using an animated ad, three frame is maximum to portray your message - any more and you will lose the user’s attention.

4. Use high quality images

You don’t have to be a graphic designer to be put off by poor quality images. A low resolution image will stand out like a sore thumb amongst other Google advertising. To ensure static images are high quality, save as .png rather than .jpeg. In addition, to avoid your ad looking like a poor powerpoint presentation, stay clear of motion ‘tweens’ on gifs and other transition effects.

5. Be creative

Depending on your business, using puns or humour can be a great tactic for attracting the user’s attention. A perfect example is Arrow Training’s ad on Bdaily, which is not only eye-catching and amusing, but it has also proven to be incredibly engaging.

6. Maintain your branding throughout

From McDonalds to British Airways, all successful advertising campaigns have this in common. By maintaining branding throughout the whole campaign, you will be able to create a tangible link between your ads and your other marketing activities such as content marketing and social media. Consistent branding isn’t just about using your logo - try to use the same colour schemes, design styles and copy tone to strengthen the relationship between your advertising and your business.
