Sunderland teachers to learn something new
Teachers from across Sunderland are gearing up to join some of the region’s most renowned manufacturers to find out how they can help their students work in the industry.
As part of the Work Discovery Sunderland programme, a specialised sector day is being hosted by the city’s Nissan plant next week (Jan 26) giving head teachers and guidance teachers an insight into career paths.
Along with Nissan itself, the event will feature presentations from some of the region’s leading manufacturing companies, including Liebherr, Grundfos, Tacle Seating and Calsonic Kansei.
The Work Discovery Sunderland programme has grown out of Work Discovery Week and includes specialised sector days and inspirational speaker days.
This is the first time one of the events has been aimed at teachers rather than pupils, giving them vital information about the career entry points in manufacturing.
Previous sector days have included a focus on hospitality, health and utilities, which have involved scores of primary and secondary schools from across the city.
Since Work Discovery Week was launched in 2013 the initiative has seen thousands of students benefit from the events with some of the region’s biggest employers – such as Nissan, Gentoo, SAFC, Sunderland University, Sunderland College and Arriva – supporting the scheme.
The event was launched to develop relationships between schools in Sunderland and businesses in the region and from the initial week of events the initiative has grown into a year-long programme of activities.
This year’s Work Discovery Week will run from June 29 to July 3.
