Smith & Milton designs identity for Farfalla yatch
Smith & Milton has unveiled the identity for a newly-built luxury yacht in South Africa, designed by racing and cruising yacht designer, Bruce Kenneth Farr, OBE.
The ‘Farfalla’, which means ‘butterfly’ in Italian, is a SW102 sailing yacht crafted from generations of experience in the finest thinking, techniques and workmanship. It was built by Will Persico’s Southern Wind Shipyard and is currently docked in Cape Town, South Africa.
Smith & Milton has designed the logo for the yacht, which will appear on the boat sails, towels and linen as well as staff uniforms, crockery, cushions, menus, signage and water bottles.
The logo features the outline of a butterfly designed to look like it’s drawn with rope. The identity nods to the name of the boat while retaining an element of simplicity, nautical heritage and luxury. It will be printed in red, white and blue variations.
Steven Anderson, creative director at Smith & Milton, said: “This brief was a really exciting one to work on simply because of the nature of the project. To have the opportunity to produce an identity for such a beautiful piece of craft work as the Farfalla, created by a world-renowned designer, was a great experience for the team here.
“Many of the boats designed by Bruce Farr have a name that nods to his Italian origins – in this case ‘farfalla’. We wanted to bring the name to life through the identity, which is why we focused on the shape of a butterfly. It was important to create a logo that was in keeping with the elegant detailing and refined design of the vessel while also keeping an element of simplicity so that it would look right no matter how it was used. We can’t wait to see how it looks in real life.”
