Mechan scoops prestigious SME award

Rail depot equipment specialist, Mechan, has been named the top small and medium sized enterprise (SME) in the Sheffield city region.

The manufacturer won the SME category at this year’s Made in Sheffield Awards, thanks to its commitment to innovation and investment in new technologies.

Held at the city’s historic Cutlers Hall, the event brought together 300 leading businesses from across the region to celebrate local manufacturing excellence. Hosted by Channel 4 News anchor, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and the Master Cutler, David Grey, the area’s highest achievers were honoured, many of whom are world leaders in their respective fields.

Richard Carr, Mechan’s managing director, said: “We are thrilled that our contribution to the local business community has been recognised by colleagues from the manufacturing sector. This is a fantastic accolade and reflects the hard work and commitment shown by our entire team, whose efforts produce such excellent products and levels of customer service.”

Mechan’s heavy lifting and handling equipment can be found in rail depots around the globe, helping clients, such as Hitachi and Alstom, maintain rolling stock of all shapes and sizes. The firm is proud of its Sheffield roots and seeks to drive business back into the city region by establishing a local supply chain – 80% of the components used in its products are sourced within a 20 minute drive of the firm’s headquarters.

In addition to securing the SME prize, Mechan was one of only four firms shortlisted for the headline Made in Sheffield Award. For more information about its achievements, telephone (0114) 257 0563 or visit www.mechan.co.uk
