Welsh farmers invited to TAG project Future Sheep Flock event
How can Welsh farmers utilise the latest technology available to the industry? Industry experts will share their experiences at Lampeter’s Tan y Graig farm in Silian, Ceredigion on Tuesday 2 June 2015.
The event organised by TAG project, delivered by Menter a Busnes which has been implementing new technologies on sheep farms in Wales, invites farmers from across Wales to the event. Discussions will centre around the potential flock management opportunities available to farm businesses using new techniques and technologies.
Three industry figureheads will share their experiences of using technological advances within the sheep industry.
Carmarthenshire farmer, Irwel Jones has utilised support, available from TAG, to implement Electronic Identification technology available to improve flock performance at his home farm at Aberbranddu in Pumsaint. He has specifically looked at new technology to measure aspects of ewe nutrition so that he has the data available to make better management decisions.
Farmer Robert Hodgkins from West Sussex has seen sheep genomics play a driving role in future profitable performance prediction for his 3000 plus New Zealand Romney ewes at his family run farm.
Dorset farmer, Mike Miller will share with attendees to the event how he has used specific sheep and graph measuring software to increase sheep production off forage discovered during his Nuffield Scholarship.
The event which runs from 9:30am to 3:00pm on Tuesday, 2 June 2015 will be officially opened by Welsh Government Deputy Minister for Farming and Food, Rebecca Evans. Refreshments will be provided during the day, including tea and coffee with a bacon bap at 9:30am. The Minister will open and address the event at 10am.
In addition to the guest speakers’ seminars, TAG staff will be on hand to share their in-depth knowledge of all four elements of the project, including: ewe nutrition; sheep genomics, ease of data collection and the control of dog tapeworm.
Electronic Identification software companies, Welsh Government Farm Liaison Service staff plus Hybu Cig Cymru advisors will also be in attendance. NFU Cymru, FUW and other project partners will also be on hand during the day.
