Wow, what a month! Where did May go?

This month the country witnessed one of the biggest events of the last five years - The big Bdaily rebrand! Oh, and that small matter of the General Election too…

Yet, despite so much going on this month, our wonderful region still managed to inspire us, as the North East’s spirit of entrepreneurialism continued to reign supreme. A whole host of new businesses, across a range of sectors, launched this month. So sit back and relax as we bring you the top five eye-catching new startups launched in the North East this month.

Mannys New York Pizza Deli, Newcastle

Entrepreneur Olly Henderson has launched a New York-style pizza deli in Newcastle City Centre, Mannys New York Pizza Deli, creating 12 new jobs.

Mannys New York Pizza Deli is being established on Ridley Place in Newcastle by Olly Henderson, whose previous ventures have included being co-founder of Capology – the UK’s biggest independent retailer of caps, which has its flagship store in Newcastle – and two technology businesses which operated internationally and counted Manchester United and News International among their clients.

Arty Wood Craft, Northumberland

Northumberland craftsman Tyrone Santa Maria has overcame redundancy by setting up his own business with the help of a North East enterprise agency.

Tyrone, 53, from Blyth, had been made redundant a number of times throughout his career, which included roles at international fashion house Burberry and popular shoe company Simply Way, before launching his business Arty Wood Craft with the help of Pinetree.

AK Sport, Seaham

North East sports enthusiast Angela Karamath has successfully established a new business, AK Sport, following support from the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC).

Angela, a former primary school teacher, quit her job after having an epiphany moment to follow her dream of increasing children’s participation and enjoyment in the world of sport.

Now, five months after bringing her business idea to the BIC, Angela delivers a variety of sports and sessions in three schools around Seaham.

Easy Printing Ltd, Washington

A new printing company has started recruitment after becoming the latest tenant to set up shop in the new Washington Business Centre.

Easy Printing Ltd was started by Bill Duncan, who after 25 years’ experience in the industry, decided to take the plunge and set up his own business. He is now aiming to create two or three jobs in the next few months as the company focuses on providing printing services to small and medium sized businesses across the region.

It’s a major change for Bill, who handled the print management requirements for global giants such as Coca-Cola, Virgin, Disney and L’Oreal in his previous position.

The Green, Washington

A Washington couple are have seen their retail business dream become a reality, thanks to with help from the commercial property team at Gordon Brown Law Firm.

Wayne and Kelly Kennedy’s tea room, florist and concept store ‘The Green’ has recently opened in the building left standing empty when the local library closed, centrally based on Washington’s village green.
