Martin-Brooks cooks up educational baker's dozen
While teachers and children make the most of the holidays, Sheffield’s expert roofers, Martin-Brooks, are busy filling classrooms across the north with the sounds of hard work.
There will be no summer break for the specialist roofers who are making the most of the extended holiday to carry out repairs at 13 schools, stretching across four counties.
Martin-Brooks is undertaking projects of all shapes and sizes at one specialist unit, two junior and ten primary schools. Whilst the majority of these will take place in firm’s home county of South Yorkshire, teams will be working as far afield as Brompton on Swale in North Yorkshire and Kinoulton in South Nottinghamshire.
The jobs range in complexity from simple slate and guttering repairs to an eight week project with main contractor, Balfour Beatty, at Greystones Primary in Sheffield. Martin-Brooks’ is adding new roof coverings to an extension currently under construction and to the existing building, where upgraded insulation will also be installed.
Alex Elmore, Martin-Brooks’ project manager, said: “Schools schedule construction work for the summer break in preparation for the new term and to minimise the risk to children in their care. Each year, the number of contracts we take on increases and they are spread over an ever wider geographic area. Coordinating this amount of work in such a relatively short period requires high levels of organisation, but we enjoy the challenge and our team is on target to deliver all 13 contracts on time and on budget.”
Martin-Brooks provides a wide range of roofing services to the domestic and commercial sectors. It is a member of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors’ heritage register and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks are carried out on all management and site operatives to demonstrate they are suitable to work around children and vulnerable adults.
