Materials Processing Institute welcomes university students

THE MATERIALS Processing Institute has shown commitment to driving new talent by welcoming five new faces to its Middlesbrough headquarters.

Four placement students from universities across the country have spent the summer working in the Institute’s pioneering teams in process research and development.

In addition, another student has joined for a one-year placement to gain practical knowledge before she begins her university degree.

The students were George Gibbins, an Aerospace Engineering student from the University of Bristol, Ben Wesson, a Physics Masters student from the University of Sheffield, Mike Imber, an Engineering student from Durham University, Darren Jefferson, a Mechanical Engineering student from Teesside University and Sarah Martin who has joined the Institute for a year before she goes onto study Chemical Engineering at Edinburgh University.

The students have been involved in various projects including oxygen furnace thermodynamic modelling, chemical analysis, metal recovery, basic oxygen steelmaking, audiometer controls and quality management..

Darren said: “I have been given the opportunity to develop material properties analysis which is part of my degree, and it has been really enjoyable to work with and learn new skills from the research teams.

“This experience will definitely benefit me in my studies. I’ve had a great time here.”

The students have been using the Institute’s state-of-the-art facilities to develop their analytical skills and apply their university education to real life situations.

Andrew Cargill, Marketing Manager for the Materials Processing Institute, said: “Having the students here at the Institute has been extremely beneficial.

“Their skills have been honed and they will be able to adapt them to their future careers.

“We are committed to bringing new talent into the Institute. The placement students have been brilliant and we wish them all good luck with their future studies.”
