Tate Modern’s £260m revamp set to open four years late
The £260m refurbishment of the Tate Modern will open next June, almost four years later than previously expected.
Featuring works by Pablo Picasso and Mark Rothko, the 10-storey building, which is behind the gallery on Bankside, was originally scheduled to open in time for the 2012 Olympics.
Tate Modern attracts more than four million visitors a year that and bosses hope the new building, known as the Switch House, will spread the load.
Tate Modern’s director, Chris Dercon, said: “When people step into a museum today they don’t want to step out of their life, they want to get closer to it.
“The new Tate Modern will be so much more than a container for art — it will be a platform for human encounters.”
