Cyber-crime top of the agenda
Cyber-crime is one of the fastest growing crimes and with more and more businesses and customers being connected electronically the potential for this problem to continue to grow is clear. ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is holding an event on 14 October with South Yorkshire police’s newly formed Cyber-crime unit to give Sheffield’s business community help and tips to reduce the risk of becoming the latest victim.
Elaine Shortridge, chair of ACCA’s Sheffield members’ network, said: “The number of clients we connect with over the internet grows on a monthly basis. It’s a big concern for every business professional that our confidential client files could be accessed from anywhere. If anyone is unconvinced that cyber-crime is a growing problem you just have to look at the number of police forces that now have specialist units.
“I would urge any business person who is concerned about cyber-security to either attend this event or contact South Yorkshire police’s specialist unit for advice. It’s far better to get advice in advance than to clear up problems after they’ve happened.”
