Cumbria energy plant to create 30 jobs after securing council land
The minds behind a new energy plant in Cumbria that could create 30 jobs have secured land for the development.
Executive members of Allerdale Council agreed earlier today (October 14) to provide Stockport-based electrical and solar energy firm Greenwise Energy Ltd with seven acres of land at Oldside, near the Port of Workington.
Greenwise Energy Ltd will convert waste material into energy at the plant, which is expected to be operational by mid-2019.
As part of the deal, Greenwise Energy Ltd will pay the council rent of £35k a year during the construction process, with that sum rising to £200k once the facility is in full operation.
However, the firm will have the option of purchasing the land for around £3m.
In a report, the council has said it: “owns a large parcel of land north of the port of Workington of which 26 acres is developable in its current state.
“There may be further parts of the land that could be development but that requires more thought and investment.”
A public consultation will be held before the council grants planning consent.
