Guildford welcomes 'green' Aldi store concept
German retailer, Aldi has given a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘green grocer’ with its new enhanced store concept opening in Surrey.
Designed by architects, The Harris Partnership, the £3m, single storey building in Guilford, establishes an enhanced level of sustainability for Aldi stores in the region.
The store at London Road, Burpham, which is due to open in November, incorporates numerous elements of sustainable technology including; Photovoltaics Panels, commitment to BREEAM ‘Very Good’ Rating, Enhanced Site Ecology, Energy Efficient Lighting/ Heating and Refrigeration, Low CO2 and Water Consumption and use of Green Guide ‘A’ Rated Materials in Construction.
Incorporating a green sedum roof as a key component, the design aspires to create a vibrant, contemporary sustainable building that responds to its surrounding area in terms of materials and building scale.
The new store comprises a gross internal floor area of 1,380sqm (972sqm net) of foodstore and warehousing with car and cycle park spaces and associated landscaping.
