Crisis: one in six UK steel workers to lose jobs this month
The UK steel industry crisis has plummeted to further depths as figures now show that one in six workers will lose their jobs this month.
Later today Tata Steel will confirm speculation that 1,200 jobs are being cut at its plants in Scunthorpe and Lanarkshire.
News that administrators have been appointed to parts of Caparo Industries’ steel operations again highlights that job losses in the steel sector are rife and ongoing.
The jobs going at Tata Steel are in part of a division that the company failed to sell earlier this year whilst rhe industry blames cheap Chinese imports for a collapse in steel prices.
Most of the jobs will go in Scunthorpe, which employs 4,000 people and is one of the UK’s largest steel plants, but two mills in Lanarkshire will also be affected.
Indian-owned Tata has decided to cut back its UK operations, raising concerns about the future of the industry in Scotland.
